Timber Framing and Mass Timber Construction Made Simple

What to Expect When Starting a Timber Frame Project

Build Something Great With Timber

Whether you’re ready to start your custom timber frame home or planning a large-scale mass timber project, our team is here to guide you. From design to delivery, we make it simple.

How to Place an Order

Ordering timber framing products and services from Canada is a straightforward process. First, customers reach out to us for an initial consultation, where we’ll discuss your specific needs, project scope, and design preferences. Based on this information, we’ll provide a detailed quote, including pricing for materials, customization, and shipping. Once the order is confirmed, our team will start your project. After production, we coordinate the shipping logistics, handling all necessary paperwork for cross-border transportation and customs clearance. Throughout the process, our team is available to answer questions, provide design support, and assist with any special requests.

Lead time & Production

We understand that timing is crucial for your project. Lead times depend on a variety of factors, such as architectural and engineering reviews, material selections, and the complexity of the project. We strive to provide short lead times and will gladly discuss timelines with you at the start of your project.

Shipping and Logistics

The U.S.-Canada trade relationship is governed by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which replaced NAFTA. Under the USMCA, prefabricated timber frame products moving between the two countries are duty-free. As part of the import process, U.S. Customs requires documentation such as a bill of lading, customs declarations, and sometimes inspection certificates to verify that the products comply with U.S. laws. We work with experienced importers or customs brokers to ensure compliance with these trade regulations, avoiding delays or unexpected costs.

Building Codes & Standards

In Alberta, Canada, timber framing products must meet strict building codes, like the National Building Code of Canada (NBCC), as well as provincial regulations to ensure safety and structural integrity. Our products are designed to these high standards. When exporting to the U.S., we ensure full compliance with local building codes, typically based on the International Residential Code (IRC) and International Building Code (IBC). We work with certified structural engineers to verify that all products meet regional requirements, including zoning laws, load limits, and considerations like wind or seismic factors. We also account for special restrictions like fire safety and energy efficiency. This two-step compliance process ensures that the products you receive are safe, legal, and ready for your project.

Timber Framing

Timber framing is a traditional construction method that uses large wooden beams and posts to create a structure. The beams are joined using traditional techniques like mortise and tenon joints or modern connectors, resulting in precise, air-tight joinery.

At Woodpecker, we blend old-world craftsmanship with modern precision. We source the highest quality Canadian wood fibre, which is shipped directly from the sawmill to our 15,000 ft² facility in Exshaw, Alberta. Timbers are cut in our joinery department, tailored to the project’s specifications. Depending on the complexity and type of timber, joinery may be hand-cut by our skilled timber framers or machine-cut using our in-house Hundegger ROBOT-Drive CNC machine.

Timber Framing That Matches Your Style and Build Plan.

From custom homes to large timber buildings, every frame is crafted to match your vision. For projects requiring surface texturing or finishing, the timbers move to our finishing department, where they are sanded or brushed and then stained or coated. Our team of skilled tradesmen can handle the installation of the timber elements, or we can transfer the responsibility to the client, depending on your preference.

Mass Timber

Mass Timber construction uses large, prefabricated wood members for walls, floors, and roofs, and is often left exposed to showcase the natural beauty of the material. Common mass timber products include glue-laminated timber (glulam), cross-laminated timber (CLT), dowel-laminated timber (DLT), and nail-laminated timber (NLT). Mass Timber is rapidly gaining popularity due to its sustainability (sequestering carbon, making it a carbon-positive product), fast and efficient on-site installation, and unique aesthetic. It can be beautifully combined with other materials like steel and concrete.

At Woodpecker, we bring decades of European experience to every mass timber project. Whether it’s a mid-rise condo, a public school, or a one-of-a-kind home, we design, cut, and install to exact specs. The result? A smart, modern structure built to last.

Why Choose Mass Timber

Mass Timber offers high-performance, dimensionally stable options for constructing wood structures of any size residential, commercial, or institutional. Glulam beams are now used for expansive spans in stadiums, atriums, and curved designs. CLT, NLT, and DLT are used for shear walls, floors, ceilings, and roofs. Providing incredible design flexibility for architects, engineers, and interior designers.
